গবেষণাটি সম্প্রতি ইভলিউশন অ্যান্ড হিউম্যান বিহেভিয়্যার জার্নালে প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। এতে গবেষকরা জানান, সুন্দরী নারী দেখলে ধূমপান ছেড়ে দিতে ইচ্ছুক পুরুষদের মাঝেও ধূমপানের হার বেড়ে যায়। ধূমপান ছেড়ে দিতে ইচ্ছুক এমন ৭৬ জন ব্যক্তির উপর সমীক্ষা চালিয়ে গবেষকরা এ তথ্য জানতে পেরেছেন।
সমীক্ষায় অংশগ্রহণকারীদেরকে দুটি দলে ভাগ করা হয়। একটি দলকে সুন্দরী নারী এবং অন্য দলকে সাধারণ নারীর ছবি দেখানো হয়। ছবি দেখিয়ে তাদেরকে বলা হয়, তারা চাইলে ধূমপান করতে পারেন। এতে দেখা যায়, যেসব পুরুষ সুন্দরী নারীর ছবি দেখেছেন তারা রীতিমত পণ ভেঙ্গে ধূমপান শুরু করেছেন। এমনকি তারা প্রায় দ্বিগুণ পরিমাণে ধূমপান করেছেন।
গবেষকরা এ আচরণকে ‘মেটিং মাইন্ডসেট’ বলে অভিহিত করেছেন। যে কারণে ব্যক্তি ভবিষ্যতের কথা চিন্তা না করে হাতে থাকা বা তাৎক্ষণিক বিষয়ের ওপর গুরুত্ব দিয়ে থাকেন।
